In the 8th Century, an Arab man called Jabir ibn Hayyan had found that each classic element was comprised of the four elements, Fire, Earth, Water and Air. He also theorised that each element was a combination of these four elements. By transmutating, turning a base metal of poor value into a metal of higher value, you could change one metal into another by rearranging the elements within it. The change would be made by a substance, a red powder, taken from the Philosopher's Stone itself.
